Research focus Epidemiology of ageing

PI: Erwin Stolz

Focus: In epidemiology of ageing, we focus on describing, explaining and predicting health-related changes in the older adult population. Our research is based on population-representative, repeated, and comprehensive measurements of older adults’ health (e.g. frailty index, physical functioning, intrinsic capacity, disability) and the statistical analysis of this observational data. The results of our research are regularly published in scientific journals covering the disciplines of gerontology, geriatrics, and epidemiology.

Network: Collaborations exist with the following researchers: Regina Roller-Wirnsberger, Department of Internal Medicine, Medical University of Graz (Austria); Christian Jagsch, Department of Geriatric Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychotherapy, State Hospital Graz II (Austria); Emiel Hoogendijk, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, VU University Amsterdam (Netherlands), Joshua Armstrong, Department of Health Sciences, Lakehead University (Canada), Tom Gill, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale School of Medicine (US), Kenneth Rockwood, Division of Geriatric Medicine Dalhousie University (Canada).

Projects

Short-term frailty fluctuations in later life

  • This research project assesses how substantial short-term fluctuations in older adults' health are, whether fluctuations are associated with demographic, health, socio-econoimc and psychosocial factors, and whether fluctuations are relevant for the prediction of future health deterioriation. In this project, we have a professional survey agency conduct approximately 5,000 interviews with 400 randomly selected older adults (70+) in Austria.
